Have you noticed a new or changing spot on your skin?

Australia has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world. In fact, around two in three Australians will be diagnosed with skin cancer by the age of 70. The good news is that when skin cancer is detected early, treatment is often simpler and more successful.

At Family Health Care Mackay – Ooralea, Dr Peyman provides comprehensive skin cancer checks to assess moles, freckles and other skin lesions for signs of skin cancer. Skin checks are an important part of preventative healthcare and can help identify skin cancers before they become more serious.

Why have a skin check?

Skin cancer can develop gradually over many years and often has no symptoms in its early stages. That's why regular skin checks are recommended, particularly if you have an increased risk.

You should book a skin check if you have:

• A new or changing mole or spot
• A mole that has changed in size, shape or colour
• A spot that itches, bleeds or won't heal
• A scaly or crusty patch that persists
• A lump or sore that continues to grow
• Any skin lesion that concerns you

Even if you haven't noticed any changes, an annual skin check is recommended for people at higher risk of skin cancer.

Who should have regular skin checks?

Regular skin checks are particularly important if you:

• Are aged 50 years or older
• Have fair skin, light-coloured eyes or red or blonde hair
• Spend a lot of time outdoors for work, sport or recreation
• Have had frequent sunburns, especially during childhood
• Have significant sun damage
• Have a personal history of skin cancer
• Have a family history of melanoma
• Have a large number of moles or unusual-looking moles
• Have previously used a solarium

Following your skin check, Dr Peyman will discuss any findings and, if required, recommend the most appropriate next steps. Many suspicious skin lesions can be assessed, biopsied or treated within the practice, helping you access timely care.
