Influenza (flu) is a contagious respiratory infection that can lead to serious illness — particularly in young children, older adults, pregnant women and people with certain health conditions.

Vaccination is the best way to reduce your risk of severe flu and help protect others in the community.

Free Flu Vaccines in Queensland
In 2026, the Queensland Government is offering free influenza vaccinations for all Queensland residents aged 6 months and older through the Queensland Free Flu Vaccination Program.

This program helps protect individuals, families and the community by increasing access to flu vaccination.

You do not need to choose a vaccine before booking. Your GP or nurse will recommend the most appropriate vaccine during your visit.

Special Notes for Children
• Children 6 months to under 9 years receiving their first flu vaccination require two doses, at least 4 weeks apart.
• After their first year of vaccination, only one annual dose is required.

Needle-Free Option for Children
In 2026, eligible Queensland children aged 2–4 years may be able to receive a needle-free nasal spray flu vaccine (FluMist®) through the Queensland Nasal Spray Flu Immunisation Program.

Speak with your GP or nurse to see if this option is suitable for your child.

Vaccines for Older Adults
If you are 65 years or older, you may receive a flu vaccine designed to provide stronger protection for older immune systems. Your GP or nurse will advise which vaccine is most appropriate.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I get other vaccines at the same time?
Yes — you can safely receive your flu vaccine at the same visit as:
• COVID-19 vaccine
• RSV vaccine
• Shingles (herpes zoster) vaccine
• Pertussis (whooping cough) vaccine

What about allergies?
The vaccines used are suitable for most people. If you have a history of severe allergic reactions, please let our team know so we can advise you.

Can the vaccine give me the flu?
No. The flu vaccine contains inactivated virus and cannot cause influenza.

When should I get vaccinated?
We recommend vaccination from April 2026 onwards, before the flu season begins. Even if you had a flu vaccine last year, you should still receive the 2026 vaccine.
